A Unique Approach To Yoga Practice
Haṭha Yoga
Our Iyengar-inspired Yoga is a methodical and alignment-focused approach to yoga that emphasises precision, stability, and awareness in every posture. Developed by B. K. S. Iyengar, this style encourages students to explore poses with attention to detail, using clear instructions and, when appropriate, props such as blocks, belts, bolsters, and chairs. These tools help make postures more accessible while allowing practitioners to experience their intended actions safely and effectively. Rather than moving quickly from one pose to another, students are often encouraged to remain in postures for longer periods, developing strength, flexibility, balance, and concentration.
The practice cultivates a deep understanding of how the body, breath, and mind work together. Through careful alignment and sustained observation, practitioners learn to refine their movements, improve posture, and develop greater sensitivity to physical and mental patterns. Classes are generally slower paced than dynamic vinyasa-style yoga, allowing more time to learn the foundations of each posture and explore them with care. This makes Iyengar-inspired Hatha Yoga particularly suitable for beginners, while also offering experienced practitioners the opportunity to deepen their understanding of alignment, breath, and mindful practice. The result is a practice that is both physically transformative and deeply meditative, fostering clarity, resilience, and a heightened sense of presence in everyday life.
Ashtanga Vinyāsa & Vinyāsa Krama
Ashtanga Vinyāsa and Vinyāsa Krama are dynamic styles of yoga that unite breath and movement through the practice of vinyāsa - the mindful linking of each movement to a steady, conscious breath. This creates a flowing, meditative practice that develops strength, flexibility, balance, and concentration while encouraging practitioners to remain fully present. The breath acts as an anchor throughout the practice, helping to cultivate focus, calmness, and a deeper connection between body and mind.
In Ashtanga Vinyāsa Yoga, students follow a structured sequence of postures that is practised repeatedly over time, allowing for steady progression and a deep familiarity with the practice. Vinyāsa Krama, by contrast, is more creative and adaptable, with postures linked together in a thoughtful progression that may vary from class to class. While both approaches share the same foundation of breath-led movement, Ashtanga emphasises the discipline and refinement that come from working within established sequences, whereas Vinyāsa Krama offers greater freedom to explore different themes, movements, and pathways through the practice. Classes can be adapted for a range of abilities, making them accessible to both newer and more experienced practitioners.
Mysore Style - Guided Self Practice
Mysore Style is a guided self-practice approach in which students learn and develop a yoga practice at their own pace under the supervision of an experienced teacher. Rather than following a led group class, each student practises individually within a shared space, receiving personalised instruction, hands-on guidance when appropriate, and ongoing support tailored to their needs. This approach encourages independence, self-awareness, and a deeper understanding of the relationship between breath, movement, posture, and attention.
Our approach to Mysore Style is broad and inclusive. While traditionally associated with Ashtanga Yoga, we welcome practitioners of both Ashtanga Vinyāsa and Iyengar-inspired Hatha Yoga, as well as those exploring Vinyāsa Krama. Students may work with a structured sequence, a therapeutic programme, or a more adaptable breath-led practice, depending on their experience, goals, and circumstances. This allows each practitioner to develop a sustainable and meaningful practice while benefiting from the quiet focus, individual attention, and supportive community that are the hallmarks of the Mysore environment.
